Petition for the Reinstatement of Coach Roger Gagnon

Petition for the Reinstatement of Coach Roger Gagnon
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request the reinstatement of Coach Roger Gagnon to his position with the North Tonawanda High School wrestling program.
Coach Gagnon has dedicated thousands of hours not only during the high school wrestling season, but throughout the offseason, to coaching, mentoring, and encouraging student-athletes. His commitment extends beyond his own district, positively impacting athletes across the section and throughout New York State. His passion for the sport and for the development of young individuals is evident in the time, energy, and care he invests in each athlete.
The reasoning provided for his removal—that he was “emotionally too close” to his wrestlers—raises concern among supporters who recognize that meaningful mentorship and strong coach-athlete relationships are often foundational to student success. Coach Gagnon’s ability to connect with athletes has fostered confidence, discipline, and personal growth both on and off the mat.
It is also important to note that Coach Gagnon was not removed from his role as an assistant JV football coach. This inconsistency calls into question the justification for his removal from the wrestling program and further supports the request for his reinstatement.
Under Coach Gagnon’s tenure, the North Tonawanda wrestling program has experienced measurable and unprecedented success. The team has produced a state qualifier every year during his involvement, and this past season marked a historic milestone with two state qualifiers—the first time in program history this has been achieved in a single season. In addition, the program has seen a steady increase in match wins, tournament placements, and overall athlete development.
Perhaps most notably, Coach Gagnon has played a key role in inspiring and preparing an unprecedented number of athletes to continue wrestling at the collegiate level after graduation. His influence has extended far beyond competition results, helping shape responsible, motivated, and resilient young adults.
For these reasons, we strongly believe that Coach Roger Gagnon is an invaluable asset to the North Tonawanda wrestling program and the broader athletic community. His removal is a loss not only to the team but to the student-athletes who benefit from his guidance and leadership.
We respectfully urge the appropriate decision-makers to reconsider this action and reinstate Coach Gagnon so he may continue his important work supporting the personal and athletic development of student-athletes.
Sincerely,
The Athletes & Supporters of Coach Roger Gagnon, and the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks Wrestling Program
