📢 Petition for the Installation of Security Gates at Alton Acres and Oakwood Housing Communities in Alton, IL

To: Alton Housing Authority, Alton City Council, and Relevant Local Government Officials

From: Residents, Community Members, and Concerned Citizens

Date: July 5, 2025

We, the undersigned, are calling on the City of Alton and the Alton Housing Authority to install security gates at the entrances of the Alton Acres and Oakwood housing developments.

These communities have long been vulnerable to high volumes of through-traffic, criminal activity, fighting, selling drugs, breaking in cars and outsiders entering the premises without purpose from outside communities and people out of state. As residents and supporters of these neighborhoods, we believe it is time to implement a practical, effective measure that increases safety and provides peace of mind for families living in these areas.

Our concerns include:

🔹 Frequent drive-throughs by non-residents, sometimes for illicit or suspicious reasons

🔹 Increase in violent activity and unauthorized gatherings

🔹 Lack of controlled access, allowing anyone to enter without accountability

🔹 Children and elders at risk due to unsafe traffic and unknown visitors

🔹 Residents not feeling safe in their own homes and communities

We are requesting the following:

 1. Installation of automated security gates at all entrances to Alton Acres and Oakwood

 2. Keycard or code access for residents and emergency services

 3. Security cameras placed at gate entrances to monitor and deter criminal activity

 4. Community engagement in the planning process to ensure needs are met

Our goal is not to isolate these communities but to protect them. Residents deserve the same sense of security offered in many private and public housing areas across the country. We believe that the safety and dignity of the families in Alton Acres and Oakwood matter—and now is the time for action.

Please support this petition and help us advocate for a safer, stronger community.
