Petition for the fight against infrastructure vandalism

The Issue

The community of Pimville-Klipsruit calls upon the residents of Soweto in petitioning and signing off an open space located in between Chris Hani Road and Klipspruit valley road. This area hosts the map of electricity infrastructure that powers up multiple communities in Soweto like Pimville-Klipsruit, Mofolo South,White city, Nancefield hostel and Klipsruit-virklark.

The previously mentioned communities have been suffering from infrastructure vandalism and water damage faults on that site for over 5 years causing blackouts, unplanned power cuts, electrical faults and a high volume of technicians being dispatched for unplanned maintenance of the affected sub-stations. The negligence of these entities has unfortunately opened up a market for cable mining formally known as infrastructure vandalism.

This issue has become a health hazard to senior and frail citizens relying on oxygen machines as well as medication which needs to be kept refrigerated. As a result community members are being negatively affected financial as they have had to make alternative means of electricity supply. Home bound employees, self-employed personnel and local business are greatly affected and inconvenienced by these blackouts as it causes network failure and unconducive working conditions.

The safety and security of our community is immensely affected due to the electricity crisis we are facing, leaving communities unsafe and exposed to multiple security threats during outages. We as aBahlali(community members) of Pimville-Klipspruit believe that the proposed project plan will
help reduce the rise of cable mining and increase the safe guarding of our communities electricity infrastructure as well as create job employment in & around that particular site if converted to a recreational park.

This petition and signature request proposes a project plan by the community for City parks and Eskom to be mandated to convert that open area into a park with recreational facilities and park and ride points, similar to Thokoza park, Moroka dam, Mapetla park, Protea park and many more conducive recreational parks around Soweto.

We also want to petition for Eskom infrastructure i.e distribution feeders to be routed and protected in any of the following ways:

  1. Pylon our distribution feeders
  2. Re-route our feeders onto dry land
  3. Route feeders into a man-cave tunnel for secure safe guarding to eliminate any water damage faults by the stream
  4. Bidvest to sub contract our local security companies as they have failed the community

A call is made to all residence of SOWETO whether you are directly or indirectly affected by the blackouts to come out in support of this initiative to better our Soweto. No matter how big or small your contribution combined we will be able to overcome the problems we are faced with.
