Petition for the Establishment of a Fenced Dog Park at Boyle Park in Mill Valley

The Issue

  • As a resident of the notably dog-friendly city of Mill Valley, I find myself wondering why we do not yet have a fenced dog park. It strikes me as odd, given our warm and inclusive community that treasures our furry friends. Boyle Park, with its large open field on its Eastern flank, would serve as an excellent location for such a facility. In fact, at various times throughout the day, this grassy field already becomes a de facto dog park, albeit without the safety of an enclosed space.

A fenced dog park at Boyle Park would not only provide a safe space for dogs to play and run freely, but it would also act as a social hub for local residents, fostering community connections. The park will further enhance the harmony in public spaces by eliminating potential conflicts between dogs, vehicles and small children at the nearby playground. And the adjacent area with picnic tables would still be available for events such as children’s birthday parties and their bouncy houses. The park is big enough for everyone!

Studies suggest that dog parks promote responsible pet ownership and offer outlets for dog socialization, hence reducing problems associated with dogs in public places. Dog parks are endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association as promoting physical and psychological health in dogs (source: AVMA). The Town of Corte Madera’s dog park would serve as a great model. www.cortemadera.gov/948/town-bark-dog-park

The City of Mill Valley prides itself on nurturing a pet-friendly environment. Therefore, we enjoin the Mill Valley City Council to fulfill the pressing need of our community and establish a fenced dog park at Boyle Park.

Please join me in advocating this cause and sign the petition. Together we can make it happen.
