The Issue

Importance of Third Places

Third places are social environments outside the home and workplace where individuals can gather, relax, and connect with others. These spaces allow people to feel a sense of peace, safety, and belonging while strengthening relationships with loved ones and the wider community.

Studies conducted in China, the United States, and the Philippines emphasize that third places play a crucial role in supporting mental health and overall well-being.

Unlike private or commercial spaces, genuine third places are inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of age, income, or background. They are not centered on consumption and allow people to exist, interact, and rest without financial pressure—making them especially important for children, youth, senior citizens, and working families.

Urban Development in San Pedro, Laguna

San Pedro was officially declared a city in 2013 under Republic Act No. 10420, signed by former President Benigno Aquino III. Since then, rapid urban development has become increasingly observable. New infrastructure projects and significant shifts in land use have transformed the city’s physical landscape, lifestyle, and daily routines of its residents.

Like many growing cities, San Pedro has experienced a rise in commercial developments, particularly shopping malls such as Galleria South, SM Center San Pedro, Lica Mall, Shopwise, and others.

Over time, these establishments have effectively become the primary third places for many San Pedrenses.

Limitations of Malls as Third Places

While malls may be attractive and convenient for some residents, they cannot fully serve as true third places. These environments are often crowded, noisy, and highly commercialized, limiting their ability to provide the calm and restorative atmosphere that many individuals need for mental and emotional well-being.

Moreover, the expansion of malls frequently replaces opportunities for urban green spaces such as public parks.

Although some commercial developments incorporate limited greenery and label themselves as “environmentally friendly,” these features do not offer the same ecological, social, and psychological benefits as genuine public green spaces.

Effects of Public Parks on Mental Health and Community Well-Being

Public parks serve as vital third places that support mental, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Regular exposure to nature in these spaces helps reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression while promoting cognitive restoration, including improved attention, memory, and creativity.

Parks also enhance emotional well-being by fostering happiness, a sense of belonging, and stronger community connections (Sustainability Directory).

Parks further encourage physical activities such as walking, jogging, and recreational exercise, which amplify these mental health benefits. Activities like running in park environments allow individuals to disengage from work- and home-related stressors and reconnect with open, green spaces.

According to Loreno and Rocha (2025), restorative environments significantly improve mood, reduce mental fatigue, and enhance concentration.

Additional research supports these findings. Bhattacharya (2024) found that individuals living near green spaces have a 20% lower risk of depression and are 28% less likely to experience loneliness.

Similarly, Foderaro and Klein (2023) reported that cities with better access to parks show 9% lower rates of poor mental health and 21% lower levels of physical inactivity.

These studies collectively highlight how parks function as essential third places that contribute to healthier, more connected, and more resilient communities.

Call for Action

In light of these findings, we respectfully urge the City Government of San Pedro to:

Prioritize the development and preservation of public parks and green spaces over additional mall or purely commercial developments.

Allocate land, funding, and resources for accessible public parks.

Involve community members in the planning and design of these spaces to ensure safety, inclusivity, and responsiveness to local needs.

Recognize public parks as essential urban infrastructure that supports mental health, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion.

Conclusion

As San Pedro continues to grow and modernize, progress should not come at the expense of community well-being. Investing in public parks as third places is an investment in the mental health, social connection, and quality of life of San Pedrenses. We respectfully call on our local leaders to take meaningful action toward building a more balanced, inclusive, and livable city.
