Petition for Temporary Closure of Universities in Lahore Due to Hazardous Smog Conditions

The Issue

To the concerned authorities,

We, the undersigned residents and students of Lahore, write to bring urgent attention to the alarming and deteriorating air quality in our city due to pervasive smog. This environmental crisis is severely impacting our daily lives, making even basic activities risky and threatening our health and well-being.

As a resident of Lahore, I am directly affected by this hazardous smog, as are my friends and countless students across the city. My once-manageable asthma condition has worsened, and the health of my peers is also declining due to prolonged exposure to this toxic air. The thick blanket of smog has not only reduced our visibility but has also transformed daily routines into perilous tasks. Even routine driving has become dangerous, as evidenced by recent accidents on the motorway, tragically resulting in multiple casualties.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has long cautioned that smog exposure can lead to or exacerbate a range of health issues, from asthma and eye infections to serious pulmonary disorders. This is no longer just an air quality issue; it is an ongoing public health crisis that requires immediate intervention.

Therefore, we collectively call for the temporary closure of all universities in Lahore. By suspending in-person academic activities, we aim to reduce the health risks posed to students and faculty alike. This temporary measure would also lessen the number of people commuting in these hazardous conditions, thereby decreasing the likelihood of accidents and health emergencies caused by limited visibility and prolonged exposure to the toxic air.

The people of Lahore need decisive action to curb this crisis and protect the health and safety of all its residents. We urge the authorities to prioritize public health by enacting a temporary pause in university operations until the air quality improves. Let us not wait until the damage becomes irreversible. Sign this petition to support the call for an immediate response to this pressing issue.
