Allow Student-Led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at Centenary College

Allow Student-Led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at Centenary College
The Issue
To Whom it May Concern:
We, the undersigned members of the student body at Centenary College of Louisiana, are writing to express our deep concern for the safety and well-being of our peers. We believe that fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment is not only essential for individual growth but also crucial for the overall success of our educational institution. As such, we kindly request the establishment of a legitimate, student-led, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee that will actively promote these ideals on campus while collaborating with the current faculty and staff-led Diversity Committee.
Our college has made significant strides towards creating a welcoming atmosphere for students from diverse backgrounds. However, recent events and experiences shared by some of our fellow students have highlighted areas that require immediate attention and improvement. We are aware that Centenary has already established a Diversity Committee of which three students are involved, but we feel that three students alone cannot accurately advocate for a campus of several hundred students. We also recognize that as Centenary plans to continue to increase its population size, a larger pool of student representatives is even more necessary. As the population increases, the cultural atmosphere of the campus will continuously shift. For instance, there has already been a noticeable shift in the culture and atmosphere on campus as we begin to integrate a substantial addition to our athletics program. To make the transition as seamless as possible over the next few years, Centenary must be willing to consistently adapt to and improve its current circumstances for the well-being of its students and faculty. Therefore, it is our belief that a dedicated and empowered student-led DEI Committee that has a direct line of communication with the student body will be instrumental in addressing these concerns and effectuating positive change within our college community.
The key objectives of the proposed committee should include, but not be limited to:
- Creating and implementing policies that promote diversity and inclusion at all levels of the institution, including student admissions, faculty hiring, and curriculum development.
- Organizing awareness campaigns, workshops, and events that celebrate diversity and educate the community about various cultures, identities, and experiences.
- Providing a safe space for students to voice their concerns related to discrimination, microaggressions, and bias incidents.
- Establishing channels for reporting incidents of discrimination or harassment, with a clear and transparent process for investigating and resolving such cases.
- Collaborating with various student organizations and affinity groups to ensure their voices are heard and their perspectives are integrated into the decision-making process.
- Regularly assessing and reporting on the progress of diversity and inclusion initiatives, fostering accountability and transparency.
By creating a legitimate, student-led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, Centenary will send a powerful message that it is committed to promoting a campus environment that values and respects the uniqueness of each individual. This will not only enhance the educational experience of every student but also contribute to the growth and reputation of our esteemed institution.
We, the undersigned students, faculty, and concerned members of the Centenary community, wholeheartedly support the establishment of a student-led DEI Committee. We believe that this committee will strengthen our community's fabric and contribute to a more harmonious, empathetic, and equitable campus atmosphere.
We earnestly request that you consider this petition. Your timely response will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
