I grew up in Olancha, and I’ve seen how dangerous the new U.S. 395 alignment has become without clear signage or lighting. Even longtime locals miss the exits, and visitors drive confused or make unsafe last-minute turns. As a small business owner carrying on my dad’s legacy here, I know how much this town depends on travelers. But it’s not just me — other businesses in Olancha are also suffering because people can’t find us anymore. I’ve had several travelers tell me they couldn’t even find Olancha at all since the new highway was built.

Not to mention, traffic on that stretch of 395 is often moving at 80–90 mph. Without clear signs and proper lighting, it’s extremely dangerous for drivers to slow down, change lanes, or exit safely. This isn’t only about supporting small towns, it’s about protecting lives on one of California’s busiest rural highways.

That’s why we’re asking Caltrans and county leaders to fix the signage and add lighting now.
