Petition for Safe Crossing for Our Children

The Issue

This petition has been created by members of the local community following a serious accident this week involving two Year 5 girls who were struck by a car while crossing the Amberstone Road between Linnet Lane and Trefoil Road, two large housing estates. Both children were taken to hospital and one has suffered broken bones.

This route is used every day by families and children walking to the local primary school. Many children cross here independently on their way to and from school. Although there is a dedicated dropped-kerb crossing point, there is no zebra crossing, pelican crossing, or traffic control to slow or manage vehicles, leaving children vulnerable when attempting to cross.

The road is particularly dangerous because two entrances from the housing estates sit directly opposite each other on the main road, meaning pedestrians frequently cross at this point. Despite this, there are no traffic calming measures in place to reduce vehicle speed or improve visibility for drivers.

Residents were told last year that a crossing would be installed, yet nothing has been implemented. Sadly, accidents have occurred here before, and this week’s incident has highlighted once again how dangerous the road is.

Due to the seriousness of the incident and the fact that children have been harmed, the hospital has submitted a Single Point of Access (SPOA) safeguarding referral, recognising the situation as a potential risk to children’s safety.

Our community cannot wait for another child to be injured.

We are calling on the local authority to urgently install a safe controlled crossing (such as a zebra or pelican crossing) and implement appropriate traffic calming measures to protect the many children and families who use this route every day.

Please support this petition and help us ensure that no more children are put at risk on their way to school.
