PÉTITION POUR LE RESPECT DE NOTRE COMMUNAUTÉ TRANSFRONTALIÈRE ET DES RELATIONS CANADO-AMÉRICAINES
Nous, citoyens de Stanstead (Québec), Derby Line (Vermont) et d’ailleurs, nous unissons pour dénoncer le comportement irrespectueux de la secrétaire à la Sécurité intérieure des États-Unis, Kristi Noem, lors de sa visite à la Haskell Free Library and Opera House.

Ce lieu n’est pas une simple bibliothèque. C’est un symbole de coopération, d’histoire et d’amitié entre nos deux nations. Ici, nos enfants grandissent ensemble, écoutent les mêmes histoires, assistent aux mêmes spectacles et partagent un patrimoine commun. Ici, la frontière n’est qu’une ligne sur le sol, pas une barrière entre nous.

Le mépris affiché par Kristi Noem en ridiculisant ce lieu avec des propos insultants – qualifiant le Canada de "51e État" – est inacceptable.
Son comportement est d’autant plus choquant qu’elle visitait la région après la tragique perte de David "Chris" Maland, agent de la patrouille frontalière tué en service le 20 janvier 2025 à Coventry, Vermont.

Agent dévoué, vétéran de l’US Air Force et ancien protecteur du Pentagone lors des attentats du 11 septembre, David Maland méritait un hommage empreint de dignité et de respect. Au lieu de cela, Kristi Noem a choisi de détourner l’attention avec une mise en scène immature et déplacée.

Nous ne laisserons personne ridiculiser notre communauté, notre histoire ni la mémoire de ceux qui ont servi. Nous demandons :

✅ Des excuses publiques de Kristi Noem pour ses paroles méprisantes.
✅ Une reconnaissance officielle de l’importance historique et culturelle de la Haskell Free Library and Opera House.
✅ Le respect dû à ceux qui protègent nos frontières et assurent la sécurité des citoyens des deux pays.

PETITION FOR RESPECTING OUR CROSS-BORDER COMMUNITY AND CANADA-U.S. RELATIONS
We, citizens of Stanstead (Quebec), Derby Line (Vermont), and beyond, stand together to denounce the disrespectful behavior of U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during her visit to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House.

This place is not just a library. It is a symbol of cooperation, history, and friendship between our two nations. Here, our children grow up together, listen to the same stories, attend the same shows, and share a common heritage. Here, the border is just a line on the floor, not a barrier between us.

Kristi Noem’s blatant disregard for this place, mocking it by calling Canada "the 51st state," is unacceptable.
Her behavior is even more appalling given that she visited the region following the tragic loss of David "Chris" Maland, a U.S. Border Patrol agent killed in the line of duty on January 20, 2025, in Coventry, Vermont.

A dedicated officer, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a former Pentagon protector during the 9/11 attacks, David Maland deserved a visit marked by dignity and respect. Instead, Kristi Noem chose to divert attention with an immature and inappropriate stunt.

We will not allow anyone to mock our community, our history, or the memory of those who served. We demand:

✅ A public apology from Kristi Noem for her offensive remarks.
✅ Official recognition of the historical and cultural importance of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House.
✅ Respect for those who protect our borders and ensure the safety of citizens on both sides.
