Usually, the best months for employment statistics are during the summer when more part-timers are in the workforce and students home from college or still in high school are working somewhere.
But even with that seasonal employment, Cass County remains one of the worst Indiana counties in unemployment according to the state's own figures. Cass is at 4.1 percent, tied for the 13th highest unemployment rate of Indiana's 92 counties. Unfortunately, the news may worsen with word that Carter Fuel Systems, formerly known as Federal-Mogul in Logansport, is in dire financial straits. If the community loses even more jobs, the rate is likely to spiral.
The lack of a plan for Carter Fuel or for that matter other industries in Logansport is among the reasons why more than 34 dozen residents have signed a petition demanding Mayor Chris Martin's resignation. While Martin has claimed that his administration "gets results," the "results" in unemployment don't stack up well with other counties -- even with a Fortune 400 corporation in Tyson in our backyard. The jury is still out on how many employees from the Logansport Memorial Hospital will be retained, or how many jobs will be cut. Again, no plan from the Mayor's Office.
Please join us in demanding better for our community by signing this petition and sharing it with people who are equally as concerned or more than you are. Thank you for caring for our community.
