The good news at the Logansport Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Monday is that a long-runing establishment, the R Bar, is reopening after being closed for more than a year.
The bad news is that a neighbor had to plead with board members for the new owner to install a security light at Vandalia Street and Tacoma Avenue to stem the tide of criminal activity there. The board and the property owner agreed, and the resident said she didn't mind the brightness of the light. It's the security and peace of mind she wanted.
It was the start of a tough week for the Logansport Police Department. Wednesday, long-time officer Bryce Hall resigned. He took a position across town as a deputy at the Cass County Sheriff's Department, which is a rare move for Logansport policemen.
Meanwhile Safewise, a nonpartisan organization that produces a list of safest cities in the United States based on crime data, excluded Logansport for the sixth straight year. During the previous administration, Logansport was ranked among Indiana's safest cities and ranked in the top 10 in 2019 prior to the current mayor. Today, Columbus is No. 1 and Logansport is not ranked.
Trends such as these are among the many reasons more than 26 dozen verified Logansport residents have signed our petition demanding Mayor Chris Martin's resignation and the appointment of a professional, non-partisan city manager.
