As the numbers calling for Chris Martin to resign continue to grow, his stance on the Haitian population in Logansport begs questions about what his hiring practices will be like for the city in the future.
During his first term, he dismissed John Quinones from the city administration when he declined to accept a promotion to building commissioner. Quinones could have been retained in his position as code enforcement officer, a position he had held during the two previous administrations under Republican Ted Franklin and Democrat Dave Kitchell. But Martin fired Quinones when he refused to accept a salary for the promotion that was less than what retiring building commissioner Wayne Erwin had earned.
This no doubt was the reason Quinones filed to run against him on the Republican ticket in the mayoral primary, and which led to a move that reduced the Republican ballot by two candidates in the primary so that Martin would have an easier path to winning the party nomination.
What will Martin's hiring practices be like? Could the city face a lawsuit because it does not hire qualified candidates based on their minority status? Will anyone of Haitian descent apply for a city position?
These are concerning questions for our community, which like most businesses in Logansport is an Equal Opportunity Employer that is supposed to hire without prejudice of race, creed, color or national origin.
