As football coaches from the Chicago Bears to the Purdue Boilermakers are fired for underperformig, people ask, "Why can't we fire a mayor if we can fire football coaches?"
In Indiana, there are no recall elections, unlike other states. The only ways for a mayor to leave office is resignation, conviction on a felony charge or death. Indiana laws lag behind the nations in many areas, and this may be one of them.
But the issue at hand is how long can we allow a mayor who has not taken his responsibilities seriously -- even to the point of not showing up to work, which would result in him being terminated from any other job in which he doesn't own the business.
While the playoffs are on the line in Chicago and the profitability of the college sports program at Purdue are in play when the football team doesn't perform well, what happens to a city like Logansport when the mayor doesn't perform well? Simply put, progress doesn't happen. The industrial park has no new industries. The Memorial Center is not redeveloped. Stretches of streets are not paved or their potholes filled. There is a daytime home invasion in the east end, but there are virtually no police patrols around, inexplicably. Meanwhile, the KKK distributes fliers here in the wake of the mayor's refusal to support immigrants in the city -- even those who are here legally. And as a new study reported on utility rates raises concerns about utility rates and more than 100,000 households disconnected in the past year, there is no leadership on this or other consumer issues in the Logansport mayor's office.
There is no debate that the mayor is overwhelmed, but not by immigrants as Gov. Eric Holcomb has confirmed. He is overwhelmed by the job and the responsbilities he does not want and does not understand.
For these and the10 other reasons cited on the petition demanding his resignation, we ask Logansport residents who care about this community and want better for it to join us in signing the petition and sharing it with people like them.
