Petition for Public Safety, Accountability, and Relocation of the 9 Main St. Shelter

Petition for Public Safety, Accountability, and Relocation of the 9 Main St. Shelter
The Issue
To: The Government of New Brunswick, the Minister of Social Development, the Minister of Public Safety, the MLA for Charlotte-Campobello, the Mayor and Council of St. Stephen, and all agencies responsible for funding, oversight, and operation of the shelter at 9 Main Street.
We, the undersigned residents, business owners, and taxpayers, support efforts to help vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness. We believe every person deserves dignity, safety, and access to appropriate support services.
However, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing impacts associated with the shelter operation at 9 Main Street in St. Stephen.
Over an extended period, residents and businesses have experienced repeated incidents involving public disorder, violence, theft, property crime, drug-related activity, emergency service responses, and ongoing disruptions that have significantly affected neighbourhood safety and quality of life. Families, seniors, business owners, and community members continue to raise concerns, yet many feel meaningful action has not occurred.
We believe the current model and location are failing both the surrounding community and the individuals the shelter is intended to serve.
Therefore, we respectfully call upon the Province of New Brunswick and local government to:
Implement immediate measures to improve public safety in the neighbourhood surrounding the shelter.
Conduct an independent review of shelter operations, incident history, funding accountability, and community impacts.
Publicly report safety and performance outcomes on a regular basis.
Ensure consistent enforcement of all applicable laws, bylaws, and operational standards.
Develop a transition plan to relocate the current shelter operation to a more appropriate location.
Commit to meaningful consultation with affected residents and businesses regarding future housing and shelter decisions.
This petition is not about opposing support for vulnerable people. It is about finding a solution that balances compassion with public safety, accountability, and respect for the people who live, work, raise families, and invest in our community.
We respectfully request immediate action.
