Petition for Property Tax Exemption Reform for Disabled Veterans in Oklahoma
To the Honorable Members of the Oklahoma State Legislature,
We, the undersigned citizens of Oklahoma, are writing to respectfully request a revision to the current property tax exemption law for disabled veterans. As it stands, disabled veterans are only eligible for a property tax exemption if they own and occupy their home as of January 1st of each year. This policy is causing undue financial hardship for many of our brave veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country.
Proposed Solution: We propose that the law be amended to allow disabled veterans, with service-connected disabilities ranging from 10% to 100%, to be eligible for the property tax exemption for the entire year, regardless of the date of home purchase. This change would recognize the continuous sacrifices of our veterans and provide them with the financial stability they deserve.
Issues Faced by Disabled Veterans:
1. Financial Hardship: Many disabled veterans live on fixed incomes and struggle with medical expenses, daily living costs, and the challenges of adjusting to civilian life. An unexpected property tax bill can be a significant burden, particularly for those who purchase homes later in the year.
2. Accessibility and Stability: Housing stability is crucial for disabled veterans who may have mobility issues or require special accommodations. The current law forces veterans to wait for an entire year to receive financial relief, which can delay their ability to secure and modify a suitable living environment.
3. Mental Health: Financial stress can exacerbate mental health conditions such as PTSD and anxiety, which are prevalent among veterans. Easing the financial burden through a year-round property tax exemption can significantly contribute to their mental well-being.
4. Recognition of Service: The current policy inadvertently penalizes veterans for purchasing homes later in the year, undermining the recognition and appreciation we owe them for their service. Amending the law to provide exemptions year-round honors their contributions and sacrifices.
Support for the Proposed Change: By extending the property tax exemption to cover the entire year for all primary residence purchases by disabled veterans, Oklahoma would be:
• Providing equitable support: Ensuring that all disabled veterans receive the same benefits, regardless of the timing of their home purchase.
• Reducing financial strain: Alleviating the financial pressures faced by veterans, allowing them to focus on their recovery and reintegration into civilian life.
• Promoting homeownership: Encouraging veterans to invest in homes and contribute to the local economy, knowing they have financial stability.
• Enhancing community well-being: Strengthening the support system for veterans, fostering a more inclusive and appreciative community.
In conclusion, we urge you to consider the immense value that our veterans bring to our state and the unique challenges they face. Amending the property tax exemption law to provide year-round eligibility for disabled veterans will demonstrate our commitment to honoring their service and ensuring their well-being.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your support in making this much-needed change.
Sincerely,
The Citizens of the Great State of Oklahoma
