We, the undersigned, write to express our deep concern regarding the lack of a policy within the Windsor Unified School District (WUSD) to prevent immigration enforcement agents from entering school grounds to remove students. Schools should serve as safe havens for all students and their families, fostering an environment where learning and personal growth can thrive free from fear and intimidation.

As of today, all other school districts in Sonoma County have adopted clear policies and protocols to address this issue and ensure that their campuses remain places of safety and inclusion. WUSD, however, has yet to implement such a policy, leaving students and families vulnerable and uncertain about their safety at school.

Immigration enforcement activities on school grounds not only violate the trust between families and educational institutions but also jeopardize students' mental health and academic success. When families fear that their children may be targeted at school, students are less likely to attend, which directly impacts their educational opportunities and long-term success.

We urge the Windsor Unified School District to adopt a formal policy that:

Prohibits immigration enforcement agents from entering school grounds without a judicial warrant and explicit approval from the district superintendent.
Ensures that all staff are trained annually on how to respond to immigration enforcement attempts while prioritizing the safety and privacy of students.
Communicates clearly to parents and guardians that WUSD will protect their children from unnecessary fear and disruption caused by immigration enforcement activities.
Establishes procedures for staff to follow in the event of an immigration enforcement request, including notifying the district's legal counsel and maintaining confidentiality regarding student information.
It is the moral and ethical duty of WUSD to stand with its students and their families, particularly those who are undocumented or come from mixed-status households. No child should have to choose between their education and their sense of safety.

We, the undersigned, call on the Windsor Unified School District to act immediately and adopt a protective policy. Failure to do so will continue to foster unnecessary fear and erode trust within the school community, ultimately discouraging students from attending school and achieving their full potential.

Together, we can ensure that all students, regardless of their immigration status or family background, feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Petición para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Windsor: Establezcan una Política que Proteja a los Estudiantes Indocumentados

A: La Junta Directiva y Administración del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Windsor

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, hacemos un llamado urgente al Distrito Escolar Unificado de Windsor para que implemente de inmediato una política clara y estricta que prohíba el ingreso de agentes de inmigración a las escuelas para retirar a estudiantes. Es su deber primordial garantizar la seguridad y el bienestar de todos los estudiantes y sus familias, independientemente de su estatus migratorio.

Todos los demás distritos escolares en el condado han establecido políticas diseñadas para proteger a los estudiantes y sus familias de posibles incursiones de agentes de inmigración. Sin embargo, Windsor sigue sin tomar medidas claras al respecto. Esta falta de acción crea un clima de miedo innecesario que afecta directamente la asistencia y el desempeño académico de los estudiantes. Ningún estudiante debería sentirse inseguro o temeroso de asistir a la escuela.

Exigimos que el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Windsor adopte una política que incluya:

Protocolo claro para el personal: El personal escolar debe estar capacitado para manejar situaciones en las que agentes de inmigración soliciten acceso a las instalaciones. Esto incluye negar el ingreso a menos que presenten una orden judicial firmada por un juez.
Comunicación con las familias: Garantizar que las familias sean notificadas de inmediato en caso de cualquier intento de agentes de inmigración de interactuar con los estudiantes.
Protección de la información estudiantil: Prohibir la divulgación de cualquier información personal o de registro estudiantil a agencias de inmigración sin el debido proceso legal.
Ambiente seguro: Implementar medidas para garantizar que las escuelas sean espacios seguros donde todos los estudiantes puedan aprender sin miedo.
La falta de acción por parte de la administración de Windsor no solo pone en riesgo a los estudiantes, sino que también envía un mensaje de desprotección a nuestras comunidades más vulnerables. Las escuelas deben ser santuarios de aprendizaje, no lugares de miedo o incertidumbre.

Solicitamos que esta política sea implementada de manera inmediata para garantizar que todos los estudiantes puedan continuar su educación en un ambiente seguro y protegido. Si el distrito no actúa, muchas familias podrían tomar la difícil decisión de no enviar a sus hijos a la escuela, lo que afectará su derecho fundamental a la educación.

Esperamos una respuesta urgente y acciones concretas por parte del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Windsor.
