The Issue

To: The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), NYS Senator Bill Weber, and the NYS Assemblyman Patrick Carroll

Date: January 11, 2026

Subject: Request for Sidewalk Installation between 5th Avenue and 257 N. HighlandAvenue and Highmount Ave and FairView Ave.

Statement of Purpose: We, the undersigned residents, concerned citizens of Nyack, formally petition the Village of Nyack and the NYSDOT to install a standard concrete sidewalk on:

  1. The East side of North Route 9 West connecting 5th Avenue to the corner of 6th ave and past 257 N. Highland Avenue connecting with the sidewalk starting at 265 N Highland Ave.
  2. The East side of North Route 9 West between Highmount Ave and Fairview Ave

Reason for Request: Currently, this stretch of road lacks a dedicated pedestrian path, forcing residents—including children, seniors, and commuters—to walk on the shoulder or in the roadway or uneven, hazardous terrain. This creates a significant safety hazard due to:

  1. Traffic Volume from the High School & future Yeshiva on 350 North Highland Avenue (Route 9W): This state-maintained corridor sees heavy vehicle flow and will see more from residence outside the community of Nyack with the potential of a new Yeshiva.
  2. Lack of Accessibility: The current terrain is not compliant with ADA standards, preventing residents with mobility aids or strollers from navigating the area safely with a daycare inaccessible from the 6th Ave street corner.
  3. Public Safety: Pedestrians are currently placed in direct conflict with vehicular traffic, increasing the risk of accidents.

Requested Action: We respectfully request that the Nyack Village Board of Trustees and The Upper Nyack Village Board formally advocate to the NYSDOT for this project and investigate potential funding through state grants or the New York State Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS).
