Petition for Mercy and Release Wesam Zumot

Petition for Mercy and Release Wesam Zumot
The Issue
Bring Wesam Zumot Home This petition is written with deep pain and love for Wesam Zumot, who has spent nearly his entire adult life in prison after surviving a moment of terror and trusting that telling the truth would protect him. Before prison, Wesam was a working man, a son, and a brother who believed in peace and responsibility. Violence was never his nature. One night after working late, Wesam was followed and confronted by five individuals five against one. Surrounded and terrified, with a gun pointed directly at him, he believed his life was about to end. Acting on instinct to survive, he defended himself. The person who threatened him later passed away.
That loss of life is tragic and has weighed on Wesam every day for the past 24 years. Wesam did not run. Shaking and in shock, he turned himself in and trusted the system. Instead of being recognized as someone who survived a deadly threat, he was sentenced to decades behind bars. Today, Wesam has been incarcerated for 24 years. Prison took his youth and freedom, but not his humanity.
Wesam chose growth over bitterness. He completed over 300 educational and rehabilitation programs, maintained steady work, and became a mentor to younger men guiding them away from gangs and violence. Despite decades of proven transformation, Wesam remains incarcerated with no opportunity for parole. Wesam is not the worst moment of his life.
He is a human being who has accepted responsibility, chosen healing, and earned the chance to come home. We ask for mercy. We ask for humanity. We ask for justice that can see beyond punishment.
