Petition for Lafayette Parish Diocesan High Schools to Shift to 10-Point Grading Scale

Petition for Lafayette Parish Diocesan High Schools to Shift to 10-Point Grading Scale
The Issue
We are demanding our Lafayette Parish Diocesan Schools adopt a 10-point grading scale, with added weight for honors (+0.5) and AP courses (+1.0). The Superintendent and the principals are opposed to the change and refuse to discuss the disadvantages - but we, the stakeholders, know this transition is crucial for several reasons.
First, a 10-point grading scale is the norm across most educational institutions in the United States. In 2024, Louisiana law changed to require all public and charter school students across the state to change from a uniform 7 point grading scale to a 10 pt grading scale. It provides a more accurate and fair assessment of our students' academic performance and better aligns with the grading systems used by colleges and universities. This change will significantly enhance our students' prospects during college admissions and merit-based scholarship evaluations.
Implementing a 10-point scale will demonstrate our commitment to adapting and modernizing our educational practices - without diminishing our evaluation of our students' comprehension. It will also ensure that our students are evaluated on a level playing field, both within our school and in comparison to their peers at other institutions- who are applying to universities with GPAs exceeding a 4.0.
Our Diocesan schools have a proud tradition, but we must not cling to outdated practices when better options are available. As St. Thomas More wisely said in "Utopia," "But though they willingly let go all the good things that were among those of former ages, yet, if better things are proposed, they cover themselves obstinately with this excuse of reverence to past times."
Let's make it clear that we are listening to our students, recognizing their hard work, and committed to their success and future academic opportunities. By signing this petition, you support a change that will better serve our students and their future opportunities.
