Petition for Island Resident Discount on BC Ferries

Petition for Island Resident Discount on BC Ferries
The Issue
To whom it may concern,
We, the undersigned residents of the islands served by BC Ferries, hereby petition for the implementation of a resident discount on ferry access. As essential members of these island communities, we rely heavily on BC Ferries as our primary means of transportation to and from the mainland for work, medical appointments, education, and other essential services. However, the current fare structure places a significant financial burden on residents, making it increasingly difficult to access these vital services.
Residents of the islands face unique challenges and higher living expenses compared to those living on the mainland. The cost of living, including housing, groceries, and utilities, is often higher on the islands, and many residents already struggle to make ends meet. The lack of affordable transportation options only exacerbates this financial strain, hindering our ability to access essential services and maintain a reasonable quality of life.
Furthermore, it is essential to recognize that BC Ferries is not just a mode of transportation for island residents; it is an essential lifeline that connects us to the mainland and allows us to participate fully in the economic, social, and cultural life of the region. Without affordable ferry access, our communities risk isolation and economic decline, which would have far-reaching consequences for both residents and the broader region.
In contrast, tourists and visitors who use BC Ferries are often able to budget for their travel expenses and are not faced with the same financial challenges as residents. While tourism is undoubtedly important to the local economy, it is unjustifiable to burden island residents with the same fare rates as tourists, especially considering the essential nature of ferry access for residents.
Therefore, we urge BC Ferries to implement a resident discount program that provides fair and affordable ferry access for island residents. This discount should be based on residency status and be accessible to those who can provide proof of residency. By implementing such a program, BC Ferries would not only fulfill its mandate to provide essential transportation services but also demonstrate its commitment to supporting the well-being and sustainability of island communities.
Thank you for considering our petition. We trust that you will recognize the importance of this issue and take the necessary steps to address the inequities in the current fare structure.
