Petition for Investment in Blundell Road Park, Luton
The Issue
As your local Labour Councillor for Saints Ward, I am committed to securing the investment needed to transform Blundell Road Park, the only public green space serving our local community. For too many years, the park has suffered from underinvestment, despite being used every day by residents of all ages for recreation, exercise and relaxation.
I have received countless requests from residents highlighting concerns about the park's ageing facilities, deteriorating infrastructure and lack of investment. Our community deserves a park that is safe, attractive, accessible and capable of meeting the needs of a growing population.
We are therefore calling on Luton Borough Council to commit funding for a comprehensive programme of improvements, including:
- A modern, inclusive children's play area with high-quality equipment suitable for children of all ages and abilities.
- The repair and widening of the main footpaths, creating a safe, accessible walking route for pedestrians, wheelchair users, mobility scooter users, parents with pushchairs, runners and those enjoying daily exercise.
- The installation of environmentally friendly, solar-powered lighting along the main walking footpath to improve safety, increase year-round use, and encourage more people to enjoy the park in the evenings and throughout the winter months.
- The redevelopment of the park's dilapidated tennis courts into a modern Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), providing high-quality facilities for football, basketball, tennis and other sports. This would create a valuable recreational space for children, teenagers and adults, encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing anti-social behaviour.
- Additional seating, bins and landscaping to create a greener, more welcoming environment for families and visitors.
- A long-term investment and management plan with the ambition of achieving Green Flag Award status, the national benchmark for high-quality parks and green spaces. This would ensure Blundell Road Park becomes a well-maintained, safe, environmentally sustainable and welcoming destination that the whole community can be proud of.
Blundell Road Park has enormous potential to become a flagship community park. A place where children can play safely, young people can participate in sport, residents can enjoy healthy outdoor exercise, and families can spend quality time together. Investment in the park will improve physical and mental wellbeing, promote biodiversity, strengthen community cohesion and enhance pride in our neighbourhood.
Our community has waited long enough. The longer investment is delayed, the more expensive future repairs will become and the more opportunities local residents will lose.
By signing this petition, you are asking Luton Borough Council to prioritise investment in Blundell Road Park and deliver the improvements our community has been calling for over many years.
Together, we can transform Blundell Road Park into a safe, modern, accessible and award-winning green space that will benefit residents for generations to come.
Please sign and share this petition and help us secure the investment that Blundell Road Park deserves.
