Petition for Investigation of Recurring Neighborhood Odor
Petition for Investigation of Recurring Neighborhood Odor
The Issue
To: Village Officials, Relevant Environmental Agencies, and Community Leadership
We, the undersigned residents of the Sussex Circle area and surrounding neighborhoods, respectfully request a formal investigation into a recurring and significant odor that affects our homes and quality of life.
For a couple of years now, typically between May and October, residents have experienced a strong and unpleasant outdoor odor that frequently enters our homes through windows, doors, and ventilation systems. The odor is noticeable throughout the neighborhood and has impacted numerous households.
The smell is often strongest in the middle of the night and early morning during periods when irrigation systems are operating. Many residents believe the odor may be associated with the private irrigation wells serving the Heron's Landing subdivision of Long Grove. However, because the exact source has not been officially determined, we are requesting a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities to identify the cause.
This recurring odor has negatively affected residents by:
Limiting the use of outdoor spaces and yards
Requiring windows and doors to remain closed during pleasant weather
Causing discomfort inside homes including being awoken in the middle of the night with nausea and headaches
Creating concerns regarding potential environmental and health impacts
Reducing overall quality of life within our neighborhood
We respectfully request the following actions:
An investigation into the source of the recurring odor.
Inspection and evaluation of any potential contributing factors, including irrigation wells, water sources, septic tanks and related infrastructure.
Environmental and air-quality testing, if appropriate.
Public communication regarding findings and planned corrective actions.
Implementation of a long-term solution if a specific source is identified.
This issue has persisted for multiple years and affects numerous residents. We ask local officials and responsible parties to work collaboratively with the community to identify the source and resolve the problem.
