Petition for Implementation of "No Homework Over the Weekend" Policy for ABM Students
The Issue
Many students feel overwhelmed by the load of homework given during the week, and find little to no reprieve during the weekend. School should not dominate our lives, leaving no time for personal growth, family life, and relaxation. Studies show that excessive homework increases stress levels in students and reduces the quality of learning (American Psychological Association, 2014).
The National Education Association recommends the "10-minute rule" - 10 minutes of homework per grade level per night. This suggests that high school seniors should have about two hours of homework. Yet many students find themselves exceeding these limits, especially when homework continues into our weekends.
Weekends are the only time many students can dedicate to family, social interactions, hobbies, and other non-academic pursuits that contribute to their overall growth and well-being. Additionally, students who are involved in extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, or household responsibilities struggle to complete their assignments effectively, leading to rushed or low-quality work that does not maximize learning. This doesn't just encroach on our personal time, it also impacts our mental health. The American Academy of Pediatrics found a direct link between students who get enough free time and lower stress levels. Recognizing the weekends as a 'homework free' period allows students to recharge, spend time with family, or pursue hobbies.
Implementing a no-homework weekend policy will also encourage students to engage in self-directed learning, explore their interests, and develop practical skills that go beyond the classroom. By providing students with the time and space to rest, reflect, and grow in various aspects of life, the school can foster a more holistic and balanced educational experience that ultimately benefits both academic performance and overall student well-being. It's time for change. We call on educators and school administrators to implement a "No Homework Over the Weekend" policy, respecting the personal time of students and encouraging a healthier learning environment.
