Petition for Immediate Safety Improvements at Highway 6 and 5th Line, Caledonia, Ontario
The Issue
To: The Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Haldimand County Council, local elected officials, and transportation authorities
Subject: Request for Immediate Safety Review and Improvements at Highway 6 and 5th Line
We, the undersigned residents, property owners, commuters, and concerned citizens, are requesting immediate action to address ongoing safety concerns at the intersection of Highway 6 and 5th Line in Caledonia, Ontario.
This intersection has been the site of multiple motor vehicle collisions, including a recent fatal collision on June 6, 2026. Residents and regular users of this intersection have long expressed concerns regarding the ability to safely enter, cross, and turn onto Highway 6 due to traffic volumes and traffic speeds.
As our community continues to grow, traffic at this location has increased significantly, further elevating safety concerns for residents, visitors, agricultural vehicles, school transportation, emergency services, and daily commuters.
We respectfully request that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation undertake an urgent traffic and safety review of this intersection and implement appropriate safety measures. These measures may include, but are not limited to:
Installation of traffic signals
Dedicated left-turn and/or right-turn lanes
Intersection redesign or channelization
Improved lighting and signage
Speed management measures
Any other engineering solutions identified through a professional safety assessment
The loss of life and repeated collisions at this intersection demonstrate the need for immediate attention. We believe proactive safety improvements can help prevent future tragedies and improve the safety of all road users.
We urge transportation authorities to prioritize this intersection and provide the community with a timeline for review and action.
We, the undersigned, support this request for immediate safety improvements at Highway 6 and 5th Line.
