Petition for Immediate Enforcement of Fines for Dangerous E-Scooter Use in Milton, ON

Petition for Immediate Enforcement of Fines for Dangerous E-Scooter Use in Milton, ON
The Issue
To the Mayor, Town Council, and By-Law Enforcement of Milton,
We, the undersigned residents of Milton, are demanding immediate enforcement of e-scooter safety laws and stricter penalties for reckless riders who are putting pedestrians, children, and families at risk.
Unsafe e-scooter use in Milton has become a serious public safety issue. Riders are speeding through sidewalks, parks, trails, and residential areas without helmets, without regard for pedestrians, and often without slowing down near children.
My 2-year-old child was almost hit by a speeding e-scooter while walking beside me on the way to the park. A small child could have easily suffered a life-altering injury or worse. Parents should not have to fear for their children’s safety while walking in their own neighborhoods.
Current rules are being ignored with little visible enforcement. Existing Ontario and municipal safety rules include:
- Riders under 18 are required to wear a helmet
- E-scooters must not endanger pedestrians
- Reckless or careless operation is prohibited
- Speed limits apply
- Riders must yield to pedestrians
- Devices are not permitted to be used irresponsibly in pedestrian-heavy areas
Sidewalk and park safety rules must be respected
Despite these rules, many riders continue to speed through crowded sidewalks and parks, weave dangerously around children and strollers, ride without helmets, ignore stop signs and pedestrian crossings, carry passengers unsafely, and operate e-scooters aggressively near pedestrians. This reckless behavior creates a serious safety hazard for families and residents throughout Milton.
We demand that the Town of Milton immediately increase enforcement and issue meaningful fines for dangerous e-scooter use, particularly in areas heavily used by children and families.
- Increase fines for reckless and dangerous e-scooter use
- Enforce helmet violations consistently
- Conduct patrols near parks, schools, playgrounds, and trails
- Install clear warning and speed-limit signage
- Create designated no-ride or slow-speed pedestrian safety zones
- Issue tickets for sidewalk speeding and failure to yield
Launch public reporting and awareness initiatives
Pedestrian safety must come before convenience. If stronger enforcement is not introduced now, it is only a matter of time before a child is seriously injured or killed.
We call on the Town of Milton to act immediately before a preventable tragedy occurs.
Sincerely,
Saman Khan
