Petition for harsher sentences for perpetrators of domestic abuse
The Issue
I am petitioning for justice for survivors of domestic violence and speaking out for all the people who don't have a voice and all those that have tragically lost their lives. As a survivor myself I urge you to enact stricter punishments for offenders.
My Ex Boyfriend terrified and terrorised me for nearly 2 years. So many people don't, as they are too scared, but I went to the police...I made statements, I trusted in our justice system to protect me but he was in front of a judge 7 times and he got away with it! I got a non molestation order and he breached it over and over but each time he got away with it. When he attacked me for the final time last year he was on a GPS tag for holding me and my friend hostage with a knife for 5 hours 6 weeks before! There was no deterrent! He was just given the freedom to attack me time and time again and each time worse than the time before. He could have killed me and unfortunately some people die as a result of our archaic and flawed system.
I got a kind of justice in the end with a plea deal. He got a 5 year jail term and a lifetime injunction. His offences should have got him 20! I am that 1 in 100 that actually got justice!!!! 99 people out of 100 don't get the say I have! They don't get that outcome and you wonder why we don't have faith in the justice system! you wonder why the conviction rates are so low but we are left at the hands of our abusers because our government is allowing this.
Shockingly 0.1% of Rape cases that go to court end in a conviction. Let that sink in!
The current leniency shown towards perpetrators through plea deals, minimal jail time and suspended sentences and insufficient punishments, such as courses that aren’t enforced, are failing to address the severity of the issue and are costing so many innocent lives with preventable deaths.
Domestic violence continues to be a pervasive problem that shatters the lives of countless individuals and families in our country. It is a cycle of abuse that often escalates and leads to tragic outcomes, including the loss of innocent lives.
Despite the efforts of survivors, advocates, and the police, our current system is falling short in delivering the justice and protection that victims deserve.
Plea deals, suspended sentences and minimal jail time send a message that domestic violence offences are not treated with the seriousness they deserve.
This leniency allows abusers to escape accountability, leaving survivors in constant fear and perpetuating a dangerous cycle of violence.
It undermines the trust survivors place in our legal system to protect them and hold their abusers responsible for their actions.
We implore the government to take immediate action to rectify this grave injustice.
We demand the implementation of harsher punishments for domestic violence offenders, ensuring that the penalties reflect the severity of their crimes! By doing so, we can send a strong message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our country and that the safety and well-being of survivors will be prioritised.
Specifically, we request the following measures be taken:
1. Stricter Sentencing Guidelines: Implement mandatory minimum sentences for domestic violence offences to ensure consistency and appropriate punishment for perpetrators.
2. Elimination of Plea Bargaining: Restrict the use of plea deals for domestic violence cases, ensuring that offenders face the full consequences of their actions.
3. Increased Support for Survivors: Allocate additional resources to provide comprehensive support services, including counseling, legal aid, and emergency housing to survivors of domestic violence.
4. Enhanced Training for police and Judicial Personnel: Improve training programs for police officers, prosecutors, and judges to ensure a deeper understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and the importance of holding offenders accountable.
5. Public Awareness and Education: Launch public awareness campaigns to educate the community about the warning signs of domestic violence, available resources for survivors, and the importance of reporting abuse.
We believe that by implementing these changes, we can create a safer environment for survivors, deter potential abusers, and foster a society that values the lives and well-being of its citizens.
We urge you, as representatives of the people of the United Kingdom, to take immediate action and prioritise the safety of survivors.
Please hear our voices, acknowledge our pain and suffering and work diligently to enact the necessary legislative reforms that will bring justice to those affected by domestic violence.
Together, let us build a safe country where survivors are protected, abusers are held accountable, and no innocent life is lost due to the failure of our justice system.
Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter.
