PETITION FOR FAIR EMPLOYEE PARKING AT PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Issue
WE, THE EMPLOYEES OF PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ARE CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO RESOLVE THE ONGOING PARKING CRISIS CAUSED BY RECENT RENOVATIONS. SINCE THE REMOVAL OF OUR DESIGNATED EMPLOYEE PARKING LOT, WE HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY DISPLACED WITH LITTLE REGARD FOR OUR SAFETY, TIME, OR WORKING CONDITIONS.
INITIALLY, WE WERE PLACED IN LONG-TERM PARKING WITH THE TRAVELING PUBLIC. THAT LOT OFTEN BECAME SO OVERCROWDED THAT EMPLOYEES WERE FORCED TO CREATE MAKESHIFT PARKING SPOTS JUST TO GET TO WORK — ONLY TO BE TICKETED FOR DOING SO. NOW, WE’VE BEEN MOVED EVEN FURTHER AWAY TO THE EXTENDED LOT, WHERE WE EITHER WALK OVER 30 MINUTES OR RELY ON INCONSISTENT SHUTTLE SERVICE JUST TO REACH THE TERMINAL, MAKING SOME EMPLOYEES NOW NEEDING TO LEAVE ALMOST 2 HOURS BEFORE THEIR SCHEDULED SHIFT.
THIS SHUTTLE RIDE, ALONG WITH THE REQUIRED WAITING TIME, ADDS AN AVERAGE OF 30 MINUTES BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER WORK.
MEANWHILE, HIGHER-LEVEL MANAGEMENT AND OFFICE STAFF CONTINUE TO PARK IN SHORT-TERM LOTS WITH CONVENIENT, PRIORITY ACCESS — HIGHLIGHTING A CLEAR AND UNACCEPTABLE DOUBLE STANDARD.
THIS SITUATION IS NOT JUST INCONVENIENT — IT’S DISRESPECTFUL AND UNSUSTAINABLE. WE ARE THE WORKERS WHO KEEP THIS AIRPORT RUNNING AROUND THE CLOCK. WE DESERVE EQUITABLE TREATMENT AND REASONABLE ACCESS TO OUR WORKPLACE.
WE DEMAND REAL SOLUTIONS AND A SEAT AT THE TABLE. THIS ISSUE AFFECTS MORALE, SAFETY, AND THE OVERALL FUNCTIONING OF THE AIRPORT. IT CANNOT BE IGNORED ANY LONGER.
