Petition For Establishing And Developing Sober Living Housing In Corning NY
To: The City Council Of Corning, New York
From: Concerned Residents Of Corning, New York
We, the undersigned residents of Corning, New York, respectfully petition the City Council to establish and develop sober living housing modeled after successful family recovery home programs such as those in North Carolina.
Our city has the opportunity to support individuals in recovery and strengthen our community by implementing this vital resource. Corning has demonstrated initiative in forming partnerships with local stakeholders to enhance economic development. We urge the city to extend this collaborative approach to address the critical need for recovery housing.
Family based sober living housing has numerous advantages:
1. It provides a foundation for successful recovery where safe and stable housing is universally recognized as a key element in addiction recovery.
2. It supports our local economy where recovery homes can contribute to urban vitality and mixed use development, aligning with the existing economic goals of the city.
3. It enhances public safety where well managed recovery residences can help reduce homelessness and associated risks.
4. It leverages existing resources where Corning's experience in community driven engagement and smart growth principles can be applied to this initiative.
Therefore, we respectfully urge the City Council to consider the following:
1. Develop best practices for residential recovery facilities that ensure quality and safety standards are met.
2. Collaborate with local healthcare providers and recovery organizations to implement an integrated care model.
3. Explore funding opportunities that can include state grants and partnerships with non-profit organizations.
4. Incorporate recovery housing into the upcoming revision of the Comprehensive Plan.
By taking action on this critical issue, Corning can become a leader in supporting recovery and fostering a healthier and more inclusive community for all its residents. Through modeling of sober living housing in Corning on the family recovery homes in North Carolina, rehabilitation for families with children can be provided that keeps these families together, avoids co-housing with those who choose not to be sober that can jeopardize a path to sobriety, and addresses the cost of living in our area that can affect the search for appropriate housing.
We urge the City Council to consider this petition and take steps to implement these changes. Thank you for your time and consideration.
