PETITION FOR ECO-FRIENDLY RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS
Let Our Faith Celebrate God — Without Harming His Creation
Every year, millions of devotees celebrate Ganesh Utsav, Durga Puja, Navratri and other festivals with immense faith, devotion and joy.
These festivals are an integral part of our culture and spiritual heritage, as well as part of our sacred traditions going on from ages... We wish to preserve them for generations to come — while making the way we celebrate them more respectful towards nature.
Currently, thousands of idols, many made from Plaster of Paris (POP) and coated with paints and other materials, are immersed in our rivers, lakes and seas. Along with them, flowers, plastic, thermocol and other waste often enter our water bodies.
This can harm water quality, aquatic life and biodiversity, while the accumulation of waste damages our rivers, lakes and coastlines….. in nutshell our MOTHER EARTH.
Similarly, excessive use of loudspeakers and high-decibel music during festivals creates noise pollution and can disturb children, senior citizens, patients, animals and birds.
Our solution should be to celebrate them more responsibly. Our ancient culture teaches us to respect Prakriti — Nature. We worship rivers as Mothers, the Earth as Mother, and regard water, air, trees and animals as sacred.
If nature is sacred, should our celebrations harm it or respect it, it is totally up to us?
The time has come to reconnect our rituals with their deeper spiritual values.
We respectfully appeal to my native citizens, governments, religious leaders, festival committees to:
•    Gradually eliminate POP idols and promote natural clay and genuinely eco-friendly materials.
•    Provide designated artificial immersion tanks/facilities so sacred rituals can continue without polluting natural water bodies.
•    Encourage reasonable idol sizes — because the greatness of our Gods is not measured by the size of their idols.
•    Enforce reasonable decibel limits.
•    Reduce and eventually eliminate plastic and non-biodegradable festival waste.
•    Involve priests, spiritual leaders and religious institutions in educating devotees about environmentally responsible celebrations.
•    Ensure that our rivers, lakes, beaches and coastlines are cleaned and restored after festivals.
•    Post all festivals “Cleaning” shall be integral part of rituals ..
This is not a petition against religious ceremonies, but It is a petition for faith to become a protector of nature…. and create examples for others.
The spirit of immersion teaches us about impermanence, humility and letting go. We can preserve that spiritual meaning while changing practices that unnecessarily harm the environment.
We have worshipped:
नदी — as Mother
पृथ्वी — as Mother
वायु — as divine
जल — as sacred
वृक्ष — as sacred
अग्नि — as sacred
सूर्य — as divine
We say:
"माता भूमिः पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः"
The Earth is my mother, and I am her child.
If the river is sacred, should we pollute it?
If the ocean is sacred, should we fill it with non-biodegradable waste?
If the Earth is our mother, should our celebrations leave her injured?
Our rituals should evolve — but our faith should remain.
Let us choose a way to protect faith, culture, community celebration and nature together.
