The Issue

Living on the Eastbank of Plaquemines Parish, many families, including my own, face significant educational challenges purely due to geography. The distance to the nearest school in Plaquemines Parish poses not only logistical difficulties, but also safety concerns. Our parish's infrastructure is lacking, and this adversely affects our children, who are forced to travel long distances along roads that are not always safe. The majority of the Eastbank Community works in St. Bernard, Orleans and surrounding parishes. This creates stressful commutes for both parents and children, reducing precious family time and impacting students' ability to focus on their studies.

Many families in our community have deep-rooted ties in St. Bernard Parish. Allowing children from our area to attend schools there would not only alleviate the day-to-day challenges but would also strengthen our community bonds. St. Bernard Parish offers better access to public resources, more extracurricular activities, and a supportive educational environment. Their schools are equipped to provide our children with opportunities that are currently out of reach due to our geographic constraints.

Establishing a cross-parish agreement between the Plaquemines Parish School Board and the St. Bernard Parish School Board is a practical solution to our predicament. This agreement would provide educational choice, promoting equitable access to quality education, regardless of a child's residential location within the parish.

Statistics show that students who have access to more educational resources and extracurricular activities perform better academically and socially. The collaboration would not only serve to enhance educational outcomes but also bolster the partnership between these two neighboring communities.

I urge the Plaquemines Parish School Board to consider the vital needs of our children and enter into an agreement with St. Bernard Parish. By doing so, they would create a supportive pathway that benefits students on the Eastbank of Plaquemines Parish. Sign and support this petition to initiate positive change for our children’s future.
