📄 PETITION FOR CLEMENCY AND FUTURE SENTENCE REVIEW IN SUPPORT OF JOTAVIOUS GUNN
📄 PETITION FOR CLEMENCY AND FUTURE SENTENCE REVIEW IN SUPPORT OF JOTAVIOUS GUNN
The Issue
Jotavious Gunn is currently serving a life sentence with parole out of Walton County, Georgia, stemming from an incident that occurred on November 16, 2017. He was only 19 years old at the time of the offense and has now been incarcerated for approximately 9 years.
Mr. Gunn takes full responsibility for his past actions and acknowledges the seriousness of the charges. However, there are important factors that deserve consideration.
In this case, another individual with a more direct role in the offense received a significantly lesser sentence of 35 years, with 15 years to be served in incarceration. While Mr. Gunn does not shift blame and accepts accountability, this disparity raises concerns about fairness and proportionality—especially considering his age at the time of the offense.
Since his incarceration, Jotavious Gunn has demonstrated meaningful rehabilitation and personal growth. He is the author of the book Should’ve Stayed Home, which was written to educate and warn young people about the consequences of poor decisions and the realities of incarceration.
Even while incarcerated, he actively mentors youth through communication with his family, using phone calls to speak directly to young individuals about making better choices and avoiding the path that led him to prison. His message, “Save the Youth,” reflects a genuine commitment to making a positive impact.
This petition does not seek to excuse the past, but to highlight growth, accountability, and the need for fair consideration over time. Mr. Gunn is asking for the opportunity to be considered for clemency and future sentence review based on his demonstrated change and commitment to helping others.
