Who is impacted?
The lives of Dartmouth students, faculty, staff, and innocent bystanders have been deeply disrupted by the events surrounding the anti-war, divestment, equity and inclusion, graduate student union pay, and social justice protests on October 28, 2023, and May 1, 2024. Individuals who participated in these peaceful demonstrations now face legal uncertainties and personal stress. Our students' future hangs in the balance, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability within the Dartmouth community.
What is at stake?
If the current situation persists, the principles of free speech and peaceful assembly, which are fundamental to academic environments, will be undermined. The legal and personal repercussions for those involved will have lasting effects on their futures. Conversely, if Dartmouth College acts to resolve these issues, it will reinforce its commitment to equality, respect, and dignity for all its members. Dismissing the charges and offering support to those affected will help restore trust and ensure that Dartmouth remains a place where diverse voices can be heard without fear of retribution.
Why is now the time to act?
Immediate action is crucial. As court dates approach, delays in addressing these issues will only exacerbate the anxiety and uncertainty experienced by students and faculty. President Beilock and Chair Lempres have an opportunity to correct a grave error, show leadership, and reaffirm Dartmouth’s dedication to justice and equality. By acting now, Dartmouth can prevent unnecessary litigation, protect the rights of its community members, and uphold its values of peaceful dialogue and mutual respect. The time to act is now—before more harm is done and the community’s trust is further eroded.
