Petition for Allowing Backyard Chickens in Mesquite, Texas

To: The City Council of Mesquite, Texas

Date: April,5,2025

Subject: Proposal to Allow Backyard Chickens in Residential Areas

Dear Esteemed Members of the City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Mesquite, Texas, respectfully submit this petition to advocate for the legalization of backyard chickens in our community. As proud members of this vibrant city, we believe that allowing residents to keep a small number of chickens in their backyards can bring numerous benefits to our families, neighborhoods, and the environment.

Reasons to Support Backyard Chickens:

1. Sustainable Food Source:
Chickens provide a reliable source of fresh eggs, contributing to food security and reducing dependence on commercial egg production. Fresh, home-raised eggs are not only healthier but also free from harmful additives and preservatives.

2. Educational Opportunities:
Raising chickens offers families, especially children, valuable lessons in responsibility, animal husbandry, and ecology. It encourages hands-on learning about where our food comes from and promotes an appreciation for nature and sustainable practices.

3. Waste Reduction:
Chickens are natural recyclers, effectively consuming kitchen scraps and yard waste, which reduces the amount of garbage sent to landfills. Their foraging habits contribute to pest control in gardens, helping to maintain a healthier ecosystem.

4. Enhanced Community Engagement:
Keeping chickens can foster a sense of community as neighbors share resources, knowledge, and even eggs. It encourages interaction and collaboration among residents, enhancing the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods.

5. Low Impact on Space:
Chickens require minimal space, making them suitable for suburban backyards. A small flock of 3-6 chickens can thrive in a well-maintained coop without causing disruption or nuisance to neighbors.

6. Animal Welfare:
Allowing backyard chickens promotes humane treatment of animals. Residents who raise chickens are often committed to providing proper care, ensuring they are kept in safe and healthy environments.

Proposed Guidelines:
To address potential concerns, we propose the following guidelines for keeping chickens in residential areas:

- Limit the number of chickens per household (e.g., up to six hens).
- Require proper enclosures to ensure the safety of the chickens and prevent them from roaming freely.
- Implement noise regulations to minimize disturbances to neighbors.
- Establish health and sanitation standards to maintain a clean environment.

Conclusion:
We believe that allowing backyard chickens in Mesquite aligns with our community’s values of sustainability, education, and neighborly cooperation. By embracing this initiative, we can enhance our quality of life and create a more resilient and self-sufficient community.

We kindly request that the City Council consider this proposal and engage with residents to explore the possibility of enacting an ordinance to permit backyard chickens in our city. Together, we can make Mesquite an even better place to live.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. We look forward to your positive comments
