PETITION FOR ADDITIONAL SLOTS IN B.S PSYCHOLOGY
The Issue
A PETITION FOR ADDITIONAL SLOTS IN B.S. PSYCHOLOGY PUP - Sta. Mesa, Batch 2023-2024
We, the aspiring Bachelor of Science in Psychology freshmen, are conducting this petition to ask for PUP - College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD) and PUP - Psychology Department's kindness and consideration to grant the mentioned college more slots and/or blocks. Having this petition is significant for the number of earnest students who believe that this expansion would benefit the academic community and, mainly, for the sake of their personal dreams.
It is acknowledged that the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Sta. Mesa, being a State University, offers only limited slots for the said program. Hence, we would like to reiterate that the:
1. Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology is a quota course, garnering the second most preferred course (PUP, 2023).
2.The course is on a “first come, first serve” basis and, as presumed in the first section, has limited slots.
3. All slots for BS Psychology were already filled in on the fifth day of enrollment.
Despite this, we humbly request for your understanding that:
1.The university admits over 20,000 students, but it has consistently failed to accommodate its accepted students’ preferred courses.
2. A large sum of applicants have been wanting to enroll in the CSSD department, with Psychology as their first choice. However, due to the “first come, first serve” rule, the students assigned at later dates were not given the chance to pursue it, which concerns the students’ future and their families’ circumstances;
a. Shifting is an incredibly risky option since shifting slots are limited with varying qualifications.
b. Not all students have the financial capability of wasting a year, as they have different life circumstances and needs to prioritize.
c. Not all students have the financial means of applying and/or transferring to another school, making PUP their last opportunity to receive an education.
3. It is also taken into consideration that the budget for State Universities, like PUP, has been reduced from time to time; so, the petitioners are doing their best to truly pick up its whole enrollment process. Yet, the school’s lack of disclosure on the admission process and enrollment date assignment makes it skeptical, as the institution failed to release definite information regarding the school’s algorithm for distributing enrollment schedules.
Therefore, the petitioners conclude that:
1. By increasing the slot availability, by means of slots and/or blocks, in the Psychology Department, a greater number of students who are interested in pursuing this program will be significantly accommodated.
2.Through this campaign, those who were deprived of being admitted to the program due to slot limitations will be given a fair opportunity to enroll, because, again, within the span of five days, the slots were instantly wiped out. This will facilitate their academic goals and ensure that students will receive a well-rounded and strengthened education.
3.The drawbacks of stated reasons on 2:a,b,c will be a lightened burden not only to the administration but most especially to students and their loved ones.
4. Importantly, this will contribute to the overall growth and advancement of the field and will ensure to meet the rising demand for mental health practitioners and advocates.
As aspiring Psychology students and Iskolar ng Bayan, together we respectfully ask the higher-ups to listen to our desperate yet sincere call for additional slots and/or blocks in the Psychology Department. This request may seem impossible, but we are certain that the slot expansion can be made possible with your assistance.
