The Issue

Subject: Petition for a Safer and Healthier America: A Call for Comprehensive Food and Product Reform

To: The United States Congress
From: Mary Elizabeth Gaddis

Whereas:

 * Mounting scientific evidence points to the detrimental health effects of certain food additives, chemicals, and industrial practices.
 * These include, but are not limited to:
   * Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame and saccharin have been linked to potential health risks.
   * Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Concerns exist regarding potential long-term health impacts and environmental consequences.
   * Artificial Food Dyes: These dyes have been associated with hyperactivity and other behavioral issues in children.
   * Glyphosate: A widely used herbicide with potential links to human health concerns.
   * High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): A major contributor to obesity and related health problems.
   * Seed Oils: Many commonly used seed oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can contribute to inflammation.
   * Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils: These oils contain trans fats, which have been linked to heart disease.
 * The use of certain harmful chemicals in everyday products poses significant risks to human health and the environment.
 * These include:
   * Bisphenol A (BPA): An endocrine disruptor found in many plastics.
   * Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA): A persistent pollutant linked to various health issues.
   * Teflon: The manufacturing process of Teflon releases harmful chemicals.
   * Fluoride: The safety and efficacy of fluoride in drinking water remain controversial.
 * The tobacco industry continues to produce and market harmful products despite overwhelming evidence of their devastating health consequences.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, urge the United States Congress to:

 * Reform Food Regulations:
   * Ban: Aspartame, saccharin, GMOs, artificial food dyes, glyphosate, HFCS, and all hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oils.
   * Restrict: The use of seed oils, allowing only "high oleic" varieties.

* Adopt: A stricter food safety model similar to that of the European Union, prioritizing consumer health and environmental protection.

* Phase Out Harmful Chemicals:
   * Ban: The production and use of BPA, PFOAs, and Teflon.
   * Eliminate: The addition of fluoride to drinking water.
   * Implement: Stricter regulations on the use of chemicals in all consumer products.
 * Strengthen Tobacco Control:
   * Ban: The production and sale of all cigarettes, including menthol and those containing additives like formaldehyde.
   * Support: Comprehensive public health campaigns to discourage tobacco use.
 * Reduce Plastic Pollution:
   * Phase out: The production and use of single-use plastic containers, bottles, bags, and other disposable plastic items.
   * Promote: The use of alternative, environmentally friendly materials such as glass and paper.

We believe that these measures are essential to protect public health, safeguard the environment, and create a more sustainable future for all Americans.

We urge you to take swift and decisive action on this critical issue.
