Petition for a Historical marker/park to remember The Pershing Point Neighborhood
The Issue
This is an official petition to remember the historical neighborhood of Pershing Point, for historical architectural, artistic, musical, and cultural significance to the city of Atlanta. It was tragically removed and torn down in 1986 for no reason, leaving many homeless and remains an open field as of January 2024, Yet was the former home of Margaret Mitchell, The Blue Rat Art Gallery, The Sound of The South Recording Studio, Drug Stores, Stan’s Waffle House, Thrifty Lady Grocery Store, Butter fields Restaurant .The Strand Hair Salon, the the Rhodes Movie Theatre.
Many residents were painters, photographers, graphic artists, writers, poets and musicians, including Margaret Mitchell ,members of the bands The Nightporters, Oh Ok, The Restraints, The Now Explostion, The Section 8 dancers, Teens in Heat, Arms Akimo, Ru Paul and many others. The community also featured 5 architectural treasurers built in 1932 that were apartments, including the first high-rise apartment building in Atlanta.. we are asking about the City of Atlanta and The a State of Georgia to preserve the space with a historical plaque and possibly turning the field into a public park/ green space even if it requires the use of eminent domain. Many of signers of this petition were former residents or people that had some connection to the community. Others are signing in support of the proposal . It is crucial to remember Atlantas historic past and remembering such loss as this that should have never happened and one which would still be a benefit to city if it were still standing.
