To: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), State Attorney’s Office  Fourth Judicial Circuit, Department of Justice  Civil Rights Division

We, the community , call for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the tragic death of 20-year-old Jamari Akins, who was fatally shot by Jacksonville law enforcement on July 9th, 2025.  According to official statements, Mr. Akins was identified as a suspect in an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store and was later pursued and shot by Officer Mercado. Law enforcement has claimed that Mr. Akins shot the officer in the leg during the altercation. However, multiple witnesses have come forward expressing strong doubts about the official narrative. Several community members believe that Mr. Akins did not fire a weapon and that the officer may have accidentally shot himself during the struggle. These witness accounts raise serious questions about the events leading to Mr. Akins’ death. We believe that all citizens  regardless of background deserves A fair, unbiased investigation, Transparency in the release of body cam footage, A thorough forensic analysis of the incident, and
Accountability for any misconduct or misreporting.

This is not just about one young man’s life. It is about ensuring that truth and justice are not compromised, especially when it involves the use of deadly force by those in power.

We demand:

  • An independent investigation by an outside agency or civilian review board.
  • Immediate release of any and all bodycam footage and audio from the incident.
  • A detailed forensic and ballistic review of the officer’s injury and weapon discharge.
  • Public updates throughout the investigation process.

Justice must be based on truth. We urge city and law enforcement leaders to honor the value of human life and respond with transparency, integrity, and urgency.
