Petition by kids, asking for climate change to be a mandatory part of the BC education
The Issue
A message from the 6 compassionate grade eight students that started this petition;
Hi, we’re here to talk to you about the impacts of climate change on our Earth. Climate change is having terrible consequences on our planet, and that’s why we need to learn more about it in school.
We aren’t the only ones affected either. Seabirds such as albatross, sandpipers, and puffins eat plastic left in the ocean by people every day. Turtles are also left vulnerable by climate change. Land animals aren’t safe either. Bears, caribou, and marmots are affected by the rising temperatures and changing weather patterns. Many of the problems are caused by garbage and burning fossil fuels, which are preventable.
We are currently in grade eight and so far we've barely learned a thing about climate change in school. It is important for us to know because in our generation, there will be the greatest amount of change in any other time period. If there's not enough in our education about climate change then the only way we'll learn about it is through social media and youtube which is very unreliable. We need to learn more about global warming so that we can efficiently combat it and guide the Earth to a better future.
But the future isn’t hopeless. In fact, you hold the opportunity to help us make a difference. Every signature matters if you want to play a part in saving our planet. Help the future generations in our battle. But we can only fight if we know more facts. For that, the schools need to pitch in. Help us in making sure that will happen.
Exactly what we are asking for;
To the Honourable Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled: The petition of the undersigned, [name] , of [City or Town], states that:
Whereas,
It is important for us kids to learn about climate change because our generation will have a big impact on our world and the more knowledge we have on this subject, the more we can do to help. BC has climate change in the curriculum, but it is not mandatory until grades 11 and 12 when you can take Specialized Sciences and earth sciences and in grade 7 when you learn a little bit about evidence of climate change over geological time and the recent impacts of humans. As a result many students are not being informed on perhaps the most important issue of our time. We need to learn about global warming so that we can efficiently combat it and guide the Earth to a better future.
Therefore,
Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House make learning about climate change mandatory in the B.C. school curriculum, from grades 3-12 for at least 8 hours in each school year.
