Don't ban the dogs -Petition against the banning of dog walking in local bushland reserves
The issue
Please sign our petition against the prohibition of dogs from D'Aguilar National Park in Brisbane. These changes recently came about due to legislation the government brought in to simplify a complex system of how bushland was classified and protected. Dogs being banned was an unintended consequence of this simplification. The changes affect bushland in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane including The Gap, Chapel Hill, Brookfield & Mt Nebo. South Boundary Rd fire trail is the most well known of the affected areas.
The previously more complex legislation allowed, for example, fire trails such as South Boundary Road to be classified a lower category than the national park which they traverse, facilitating multiple uses on these trails, whilst still allowing the surrounding bushland to be classified the highest level of protection. Simplifying the legislation means the whole area is now classified as one, so dogs are no longer allowed on fire trails. Horses and push bike use on designated fire trails remain unaffected.
The way forward is ask our local members to find a solution. If you want to continue to walk your dog in local bushland and at the same time have it protected please sign this petition. Our suggestion is to ask that South Boundary Rd (not the bushland) from Centre Rd to the The Gap (including Gold Creek Rd) be re-gazetted to regional park classification. We are pro-dog but also support protecting our precious National Park.
