We the concerned students of Political Science, call the attention of the HOD to the errant and gross misappropriation of funds by the aforementioned students’ union body. Recall that, few months ago, the union mandated that all students in the department pay a token of 500naira, which is to serve as departmental due. The token, as we were told, was to be spent on salvaging some items in the departments including its fans, chairs, as well as the cardboard separating the moot parliament and main lecture hall. 

However, at present, the deplorable state of the department’s lecture hall shows evidently that not only did the union renege on its promises, but also that it never had a perfected plan of putting the funds to use. Of course, questions were asked about how the money later ended up, but the response we got from the union’s President was quite astonishing. In his words; “the funds were diverted, to buy jerseys for the department’s football team.” And when queried on reasons the administration failed to publish a breakdown of how the money was spent, he simply said… “is there a need for that?” To confirm the probity of his claim, we queried about two students who play in the department’s football team, and surprisingly their responses contradict that of the President. They told us that, no jerseys were provided for them, and in fact the department actually had asked them to contribute some money to procure jerseys.

Further revelation made us know that, not only was the fund squandered by some members of the administration, but also that the money was shared and spent on irrelevances alien to the initial plan the dues were meant for.

Aggrieved by the absurdity, and the foolery the President seem to be making out of us, we wrote a notice on Tuesday (February 22, 2022), subtly asking the administration to prepare and publish on the department’s Whatsapp platform, a detailed account of how the funds were utilized, and if at all provide an official bank statement showing NAPSS LASU financial records. Alas, up till we write this petition neither the President nor any of his executives have reacted to the notice.

To this end, we humbly call the HOD to please intervene in this issue by summoning and helping us find out from the NAPSS LASU Executives; how they utilize the money in question. We also request that if found wanting of graft and misappropriation of the said due, the administration should be made to return the money back into the union purse, and as well tender a public apology to all affected students.
