Petition: Camber Pontins. More information needed about the proposal to house refugees

The Issue

The Home Office is in the process of choosing sites to accommodate large numbers of asylum seekers and Camber Sands is being considered.

Concerns have been raised by our local MP and public sector organisations, including Rother District Council, East Sussex County Council, and Public Health.

They all shared the same concerns about the suitability of the Pontins site at Camber as accommodation for refugees.

Camber is a remote coastal village with poor transport connections to local facilities such as shops, health services and schools, which would make it difficult for the Home Office and its agencies to arrange essential welfare and services for migrants placed at the site.

Accommodating asylum seekers in Camber would put more demand on public services and local councils as well as the voluntary sector. It would have a negative effect on the local community as well as the refugees if there was no infrastructure to support them.

The UK and Rother has a proud history of supporting people in need in our communities, but Camber is not suitable for a huge number of refugees.

Britannia Hotels, which owns Pontins, might be attracted by the large sums of money it would make through this arrangement, but this would be at the expense of taxpayers and our local residents.

Local residents should use their collective voice by petition to ask for more transparency and information on the progress of the negotiation, otherwise this decision may be pushed though without our consultation.

please sign this objection and voice your concerns to our local MP Sally-Anne Hart, who has the power to pass on your comments directly to the home office.

Please, do not delay.
