On February 9th, 2022, 15 year old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned drug in the sport. Despite this positive test, the ban placed on her appearance at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games was lifted quickly. A recent hearing has cleared her to compete at the Olympic Games while her doping investigation continues. 

Previous precedent has shown that athletes who test positive for an illegal drug are subject to immediate suspension until the doping investigation is complete. While Valieva is a minor and the severity of her sentencing remains elusive, the facts show an illegal drug in her system, which in itself should immediately bar the athlete from competing at the Games.

This decision is unfair to the other clean athletes at the Olympic Games who have spent their lives preparing for this moment. The pending investigation states that if found guilty, Valieva will be subject to retroactive removal of Olympic accolades. However, even in this case, the other clean skaters at the Olympics deserve a platform to compete at an even playing field with other clean athletes. Any athlete currently under investigation for doping should not be permitted to compete under any conditions. 

The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate the prominent desire within the figure skating community - both from athletes and from fans - to keep the sport clean. Kamila Valieva should not be permitted to compete at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
