Petition against Houston County Policy to place cameras in school bathrooms.

The Issue

The Houston County School Board in Southeastern Alabama is moving forward with plans to implement a new policy, allowing surveillance cameras to be placed in the Common Area of school restrooms.

There has been minimal effort to inform parents of this upcoming change. Recent push back from parents has resulted in the Board/Superintendent to plan meetings with the parents and teachers.

This policy is problematic, at best. Children should have the same, if not greater, expectation of privacy in restrooms or locker rooms. The superintendent has claimed that it will not be recording stalls, but that doesnt improve the situation by much. Not only is this an invasion of privacy, its worth noting that children sometimes change in common areas as well.

The superintendent has stated that it is not possible for the schools to have a teacher/employee standing in the bathrooms, due to funding. This feels like a cop-out to justify this invasion of privacy, and that should be concerning for parents. There could be many other solutions, if the Board had taken steps to fully involve the community.

They are still planning to move forward with the new policy. Please sign this petition, in the hopes that we can stop or slow the enforcement of this policy.

Thank you for your time, attention, and support!
