SAY NO TO PIRSA MODIFYING THE CURRENT FISH NETTING BAN IN OUR WEST COAST FISHING AREAS!

The Issue

Written by an anonymous individual and currently circulating around Streaky Bay. Had it not been for this individual it may just have slipped under the radar! Thank you. ' 20th January 2016 Dear Streaky Bay Business Operator I am writing to you today to share you with information, which I have received which concerns me greatly and should concern you also as a fellow business operator, that is Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), has written to Local Government Association and Recfish SA seeking feedback, to the proposal to modify the current netting ban, in our West Coast fishing areas.  The marine scale fish association are seeking permission to allow; -   the use of floating gill nets up to 600m in length within Baird Bay -   the use of power haul nets and small mesh nets in the Ackerman's Creek    area -   net fishing be permitted within Streaky Bay and Blanche Port from the     1st Nov to 31st May -   and the use of power haul nets along the western side of Venus Bay As I am sure you are aware the use of power haul netting is indiscriminate in what it catches ad as a result there is a lot of bycatch caught, it also can be destructive to the environment.  As a result we would see a noticeable decline in our fish stocks.  Needless to say if our fish stock declines this would have a significant impact on tourism to our area effecting numerous businesses. It will also affect our local professional fisherman because the netters will most probably not be local, they are likely to come from places like Whyalla and Port Lincoln and they will come and deplete our stocks and earn money, which they will then go back and spend in their own local communities aiding their own local economies.  Therefore our local fisherman may be put in a position to relocate with their families to other areas to make a living.  This could have the potential to impact not only our local businesses but also local infrastructure and government services for example teacher numbers at our school or staffing at our hospital. [State Bank being a good example]The Marine Fishing Association will declare that they are feeding the people and that is why this is required but realistically there are only a few netters who will gain greatly from this, at expense of line fisherman and our local businesses. This information has come to my attention via a fisherman, who has sourced the information, in which I have seen a copies of documented evidence.  Unfortunately I am writing this letter anonymously as to identify myself would led to his identity being revealed, and that may lead to repercussions for him. To verify this information and to register your protest I am suggesting that you contact your Local Member of Council and/or Local Member of Parliament and to share this information within the community. Peter Treloar                                             and/or Ms Michelle BesleyMember for Flinders                                             Fisheries ManagerPh: 8683 0722                                              Email: Michelle.Besley@sa.gov.au Email: flinders.portlincoln@parliament.sa.gov.au Please don't sit back and hope that everybody else will register their disapproval, it is much hard to have a Government department reverse a bad decision than it is to assist them in making a good decision for our community'.
