Stop the Junin, Ecuador Copper Mine!

Stop the Junin, Ecuador Copper Mine!

The Issue

The Intag region of Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. The opposition to mining has been going on since 1995, during which the communities have stopped two transnational mining companies. In the interval, numerous and well-documented human rights violations have taken, and are taking place.  Currently ENAMI, the national Ecuadorian mining company is conducting a joint exploration project, with the Chilean mining company CODELCO. The project is essentially funded by CODELCO and the Chilean government. Currently, CODELCO and ENAMI have begun constructing drilling sites in the mining concession, which contaminate pristine rivers and streams. They have a contract to do this for 4 years.  However, these drilling sites are already causing landslides and harming the biodiversity of the primary cloud forest in the mining concession. These primary cloud forests where the active drilling is taking place, are the last remaining habitat to dozens of species facing extinction, including Spectacled Bears, Jaguars, and the critically endangered Brown-faced Spider Monkey. Locals who work for the mining company have also already caused divisions in the community which will only increase if the mine ever gets to full operation.  By signing this petition we give our solidarity to the people of the Intag region who have been fighting mining companies for 20+ years.  This petition will be sent to the mining companies, the government of Ecuador, DECOIN, the local anti-mining organization and the Chilean government.  We have the power to make this mine not go into full operation. If the mine goes into full operation it will destroy a large area of primary cloud forest causing harm to the region's biodiversity, water sources, and people's livelihoods.
