Stop All Animal Grooming and Abuse at Petco
The Issue
Petco has has multiple cases of animal abuse, and while they claim to put the health and safety of your pets as their top priority, the truth tells otherwise. I want to end all animal grooming and abuse at Petco.
On 05/31/15 A Golden Retriever was baked to death after it was left unattended in a grooming drying cage by a Petco employee at a store in Midlothian, Virginia. The dog’s death is now under investigation by local animal control authorities. The temperature of the kennel dryer was said to reach 120 degree F!
Marks said she was informed by a veterinarian that Colby likely died of a stroke after being left in a "drying cage" for too long. The heat in the cage was supposed to turn off automatically after 15 minutes. But the vet said Colby's body temperature was still 105 degrees more than an hour after he died. Sadie, a beloved 6-year-old Lhasa Apso in good health, died in 2008 after a regular grooming session at a California Petco from heatstroke after being left unattended in a kennel cage dryer, where temps reached 107 degrees. Medical records state that Sadie suffered from “severe respiratory distress” due to the heatstroke, and her body temperature reached 107 degrees, when a dog’s normal temperature should be 100-102. She suffered from internal burns and bleeding, and the owner claims that she saw scratch marks and blood in the kennel in question.
PETCO released the following statement in regards to Sadie’s death:
“We’ve been aware of Sadie’s story since it happened three years ago. We can’t comment on the case, as it’s currently in litigation, but it was a tragic loss and we take all issues of pet safety very seriously. Over the last few years, we’ve made a number of improvements in the grooming equipment we use and we are always seeking to improve our existing safety practices. One of those improvements is that we no longer use heat of any kind in the drying process in our grooming salons.”
After an incident on 03/01/15 in Atlanta, Georgia where an employee was video taped abusing a dog while grooming, Petco responded with this:
"At Petco, the health and safety of pets and people is always our top priority, and we take full responsibility for all animals under our care. There are strict grooming protocols in place to ensure the safety and well-being of pets."
In 2014 a 7-year-old Shih Tzu suffered a dislocated hip, which then required surgery and physical therapy. The surgeon told said the injury was most likely caused by her dog falling off the table during the grooming session. The bill for the medical treatment was around $7,000. Be the voice of Colby, and the other pets who have died at Petco!!!
Petco has no business grooming animals! Let's turn the grooming areas into the dog training area!!! I was noticed the Petco in Santa Barbara teaches new owners training in an area that was 3ft. x 3 ft. at BEST!!! Petco has repeatedly shown they have lack of knowledge and care toward the animals they groom! You should only take your pet to a lisenced, experienced groomer, or a do it yourself wash!
Talk is cheap, and action speak louder than words. Animals cannot speak, so let's be their voice and speak up about the tragic abuses occurring at Petco!
Let Petco CEO James M. Myers know you want to stop pet grooming and animal abuse at Petco.
I urge you to boycott Petco until serious changes are made!
