I went to the pet store to buy some supplies for my pet hermit crabs, and when I got there, I was shocked by the condition that the crabs were living in. The temperature was 50 degrees (F) when it should have been 70-80, and the humidity gauge was 30 when it should be 70-80! Humidity is essential for the hermit crab's well-being because they have gills, not lungs. It also appeared like their food/water had not been replenished in a week or so.
When I asked, the pet store lady brushed off the concern saying that they were "trying to prevent mildew." And when I asked if the hermit crabs were even alive, she proceeded to tap them against the glass of the cage and spray the water hose right into their shells! The crabs would not come out of their shell and were terrified. I took one home who looked almost dead, and it is doing great now.
Please Petco and Petsmart, give your hermit crabs much better living conditions. Even though small and relatively cheap, these exotic creatures deserve to be treated just as well as any other animals in your store.
