Yes to a train station, no to a subdivision!

If you care about combatting climate change and social inequity, having cleaner air,  more public transit options, and building projects that support all of these things, this petition is for you.  Please click to sign.

What's happening:

A developer, Lomas Partners, wants to build 110 single-family homes on land between Corona Road, North McDowell Blvd, and the train track, leaving only a small section for a parking lot and a train platform to be Petaluma’s Eastside SMART station.

Why this is damaging:

The current design squanders the opportunity to maximize the transit-oriented development benefits (TOD) of the train station, violates the vision of the City's General Plan, and ignores the priorities of the Climate Emergency Resolution passed by the City of Petaluma.

  • Provides no neighborhood retail (coffee shop, small grocer, etc.), meaning every time a person wants a cup of coffee or a gallon of milk, they will get in their car and drive.
  • Allocates the bare minimum to affordable housing. The cheapest unit starts at $600,000 plus homeowner association fees (HOA fees). But lower-income community members would benefit most from access to the train.
  • Will make traffic worse and do nothing to improve pedestrian safety. If well funded and done right, this project will improve traffic and safety in the area.
  • There is $1B of state funding to do these types of projects right, but the city and the developer are not even considering it. We need to use our tax dollars in sound ways!
  • The Planning Commission has rejected this project 3 times but the City Council indicated 5 to 2 that they will vote to support this terrible project at the City Council meeting that has now been postponed until Feb. 24.

With few large developable parcels left in Petaluma, this parcel must be a model for sustainable development, particularly due to its proximity to the SMART Station. If the Council approves this auto-oriented unaffordable-to-many project, it will inflict further environmental and economic damage on Petaluma and make a mockery of the recent Climate Emergency Resolution.

What you can do:

Sign and share this petition: Insist that Lomas Partners redesign the project to meet the General Plan and the goals of the Climate Emergency Resolution, or that the Council reject the project entirely.  Thank you!
