As a concerned community member and an integral part of the Brandywine School District, I am urging a reassessment of our severe weather policy. Road conditions can suddenly worsen with heavy snowfall, creating hazards for those travelling. There have been unfortunate instances of car accidents involving our residents, underscoring the urgent need for change. Our primary concern should always be the safety of our students, staff, and families.

In the U.S, nearly 24% of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement and 15% happen during snowfall or sleet(US Department of Transportation). Safety protocols need to be enforced to prevent these potential accidents. It is therefore critical that the Brandywine School District acknowledges inclement weather and implements necessary precautions, including school closures, to ensure public safety.

Let us protect our community by adapting our measures to real-time needs, rather than clinging to the pre-determined schedule that may inadvertently risk lives.
